Free web hosting for schools and colleges

Pupils and students learn web development best with a real site on a real address. Daylit gives schools and colleges a class code: every student gets their own site at name.ondaylit.nl for free, for example for a whole school year. Hosted in the Netherlands, on our own servers and on solar power.

What your class gets

How it works

  1. The teacher or college requests a class code at info@daylit.nl: name of the school, course, number of students and the period.
  2. We send a link, for example https://order.daylit.nl/?code=your-class-2026, and the data processing agreement.
  3. Students open the link, choose a name for their site and confirm their email address. A school email address is fine.
  4. A week before the end of the period they get an email. Anyone who wants to keep their site chooses a plan (Static costs 0,19 euro per month). Otherwise the site goes offline and we delete everything 14 days later.

WinSCP and Visual Studio Code

Every site has its own file manager at name-files.ondaylit.nl, reachable over WebDAV via https:

Questions from teachers

What does a class code cost?

Nothing. The agreed period is free for the school and the students. Anyone who wants to keep their site afterwards chooses a plan themselves.

Can students use WordPress too?

Yes. When creating their site they choose between Static (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) and WordPress Start, which comes installed with its own database.

Do students need a credit card or iDEAL?

No. A site with a class code needs no payment details.

What happens at the end of the school year?

Students get an email a week and a day before. If they do not choose a plan, the site goes offline. We keep everything for 14 more days and then delete it permanently. A paid subscription never starts by itself.

Can a student connect their own domain name?

Yes, an own domain (such as firstname.nl) can be connected to any site. We take care of the SSL certificate.

Can students under 16 take part?

Yes, when the school is the customer and provides the legal basis and, where needed, parental consent, as the GDPR requires. We only process a name and an email address, and the sites are hidden from search engines.
