Daylit

Guide

Putting files on your site: WinSCP, VS Code, FileZilla

How to put files on your Daylit site, with the program you like. Replace name everywhere with the name of your site (from the welcome email). Your user name is that name; the password is in the welcome email under FILES.

Which way?

The details are always the same:

WinSCP

  1. Download WinSCP from winscp.net and install it.
  2. Choose New Site and fill in: file protocol SFTP, host name sftp.ondaylit.nl, port 22, your user name and password. Click Save and Login.
  3. The first time WinSCP asks whether you trust the server: choose Yes.
  4. Your own files are on the left, your site on the right. Drag files or folders to the right.
  5. Keep up to date automatically: open your project folder on the left and choose Commands → Keep Remote Directory up to Date (Ctrl+U). Every change in that folder is online within seconds.
  6. Edit in VS Code: go to Options → Preferences → Editors → Add, choose External editor and browse to Code.exe. Double-click a file in WinSCP and it opens in VS Code; Ctrl+S puts it back on your site.

SFTP does not work on your network (some schools block port 22)? Then choose file protocol WebDAV, encryption TLS/SSL Implicit, host name name-files.ondaylit.nl and port 443.

Visual Studio Code with the SFTP extension

  1. Install the SFTP extension by Natizyskunk in VS Code (Extensions, search for "sftp").
  2. Open your project folder (File → Open Folder).
  3. In that folder, create a folder .vscode with a file sftp.json containing this (the welcome email has it filled in for you):
    {
        "name": "name.ondaylit.nl",
        "host": "sftp.ondaylit.nl",
        "protocol": "sftp",
        "port": 22,
        "username": "name",
        "remotePath": "/",
        "uploadOnSave": true
    }
  4. Right-click your project folder and choose Sync Local → Remote to put everything online at once. The extension asks for your password the first time.
  5. After that, every change is online as soon as you save.

Do not put your password in sftp.json, especially if you put your project on GitHub.

Visual Studio Code with ftp-simple

  1. Install the ftp-simple extension by humy2833.
  2. Press F1 (or Ctrl+Shift+P) and choose ftp-simple: Config - FTP connection setting. A settings file opens; put this in it:
    [
        {
            "name": "name.ondaylit.nl",
            "host": "sftp.ondaylit.nl",
            "port": 22,
            "type": "sftp",
            "username": "name",
            "password": "your password",
            "path": "/",
            "autosave": true,
            "confirm": false
        }
    ]
  3. Save. With F1 → ftp-simple: Remote directory open to workspace you open your site as a folder in VS Code, and every save is online at once. With ftp-simple: Save you put a local folder or file on your site.

ftp-simple keeps the password in your own VS Code settings, not in your project.

Already have an SFTP connection for school?

ftp-simple can keep several connections. Add your Daylit site as a second block in the same list, with a comma in between. Your school connection keeps working:

[
    {
        "name": "my school site",
        "host": "server.of-your-school.nl",
        "port": 22,
        "type": "sftp",
        "username": "your school user name",
        "password": "your school password",
        "path": "/",
        "autosave": true,
        "confirm": true
    },
    {
        "name": "name.ondaylit.nl",
        "host": "sftp.ondaylit.nl",
        "port": 22,
        "type": "sftp",
        "username": "name",
        "password": "your Daylit password",
        "path": "/",
        "autosave": true,
        "confirm": true
    }
]

With F1 → ftp-simple: Remote directory open to workspace and ftp-simple: Save you then choose which site it goes to each time. That way you use the same project for school and for your own site.

FileZilla

  1. Download FileZilla Client from filezilla-project.org.
  2. Fill in at the top: host sftp://sftp.ondaylit.nl, user name, password, port 22, and click Quickconnect.
  3. Drag files or folders from the left (your computer) to the right (your site).

In the browser

  1. Go to https://name-files.ondaylit.nl and log in.
  2. Drag files or a whole folder into the window. Done.

Frequently asked questions

Where should my index.html go?

Directly in the main folder of your site (the folder you see as soon as you are connected). That page is shown at https://name.ondaylit.nl.

I cannot connect with SFTP at school.

Some networks block port 22. Use WebDAV over port 443 instead (WinSCP, or the browser); that works wherever websites work.

I lost my password.

Email us from the address you created your site with and you get a new password. It then works for the browser, WebDAV and SFTP at once.
